OUR BEST SELLER - Your Lake Eyre flight from Birdsville takes you to the west over Big Red., across the QAA Line to the south over the Eyre Creek and the mighty Simpson Desert all the while keeping a good eye out for Camels and other wildlife.. We then follow along the winding Kallakoopah Creek, which fills numerous salt lakes along the way. Continueing over the vast and majestic Simpson Desert until we hit the Warburton River. At the southern end of the Warburton River we arrive at the Warburton Inlet, known as the mouth to Lake Eyre.
When water flows, it follows down Lake Eyre through a natural channel called the Warburton Groove right to the bottom of the lake and then begins to fill belt Bay viewing Delahunty Island along the way.
At the southern end of Lake Eyre we now have the option to head west to William Creek Hotel or head East and follow the Cooper Creek system to Etadunna Station airstrip which is located along the Birdsville track approximately 80kms south of Mungaranie. We land here for a short break, (coffee & morning tea supplied) before departing Etadunna (pronounced Etha-dinna) over the old Bethedsa Mission site, tracking over the Great Stony Desert & Artisan Bores and follow the Warburton River North to where it begins life at the southern end of the Goyder Lagoon on Australia’s second largest Cattle Station Clifton Hills., tracking north through the amazing Goyder Lagoon. The northern waters flow through this natural delta system for miles, leaving behind a massive oasis located between the Simpson Desert and the Great Stony Desert. Birds and wildlife of all forms migrate to this wonderland.
As we reach the northern end of Goyder Lagoon the Diamantina river now begins to form. The Diamantina directs the northern waters to Goyder Lagoon. We follow the Diamantina river all the way back to Birdsville, with views of permanent massive waterholes, Lake Uloowaraine and much more.
This flight allows you to see one of the most iconic features of Australia and the outback. On rare occasions when the lake floods, the landscape goes through a massive transformation, and as the water starts to evaporate the famous salt lake forms and so begins another transformation returning the lake to its natural, dry, state. A spectacular sight to see with or without water! But especially this year, with the huge flooding we are now expecting with La Nina..
