Innamincka & Coongie Lakes: An Outback Area of Significant Importance!
One such outback area is the Innamincka Regional Reserve located northeast of South Australia. Here you will find the small town of Innamincka and the Coongie Lakes national park.
Innamincka: Where Natural Resources Abound
An important cultural settlement, with the discovery of gas and oil in the 1960s immensely helping the revival of the town which eventually led to the surge of tourism at the time.
With this increased tourism, a trading post and a new hotel were established. This iconic hotel is, of course, the focal point of the town and is well-established as an essential outback watering hole worthy of any bucket list. Aside from being situated in a completely remote area, it is also reminiscent of the traditional outback pub but with the added spin of modernity.
Coongie Lakes: A Stunning Natural Attraction
The Coongie Lakes National Park, a 1.9-million-hectare site lies approximately 105 kilometres Northwest of Innamincka and houses a vast diversity of wildlife.
This park is listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. For an arid wetland, the water bird diversity is high. It is a significant feeding, resting and breeding ground for an enormous number of birds that migrate to the area and a paradise for birdwatchers. The contrast from sand dunes to vast wetlands is remarkable.
This is a spectacular area and is a must see from the air. Take a scenic flight or overnight tour with Arid Air from Marree or Port Augusta SA and take in this beautiful area.
